The CMac Reference Guide - Feb 2005, Teaser Article

from our Technical Writer / Developer
- Ken Walker

After a complete review of the CMac Reference Guide, we decided on adding some chapters on Blocks and System Macros, to continue our efforts in making this reference guide comprehensive, useful and intuitive. Here’s an excerpt from

Chapter 9, System Macros:
Translate( string, output table, input table ) string function

The purpose of this macro is to translate text based on a default table or passed data. The most common use of the Translate macro is when converting from upper to lower case letters. The SetDefTransTbls macro can be used to set a default in/out table. By default, SetDefTransTbls is set to convert from upper to lower case.

The conversion is position dependant, meaning the in and out tables should match up, by position, the characters you want converted. If they don’t, the shorter table will be padded to the same number of characters as the other table. For example, this input string:

“atiopqr” with this output string: “ATIOPRQ” if used on this string:
“a quick trip” would yield: “A RuIck TQIP”

But if you had an input table of “abcdefg” and an output table of “abcde” the output table would be converted to “abcde ” and thus the string “going to the farm” would yield “ oin to the arm” because the f and g’s would be replaced with spaces. To perform this example, your code would look like this:

Str TMessage = Translate( “going to the farm”, “abcde”, “abcdefg” );

TMessage would then contain the string “ oin to the arm”.

As you can see here, Translate can be used for more than just converting from upper to lowercase. It is, in fact, used as a not-so-secure form of encryption.

I hope you have enjoyed this teaser article and are looking forward to the Guide.

Until next time, happy programming and see you on the forum!

MeL for the Masses!

- Gayle Urban

Chad Williams, CEO of Multi Edit Software, Inc., announced today the release of MeLite - a less-expensive, editing option for Programmers and students everywhere. MeLite incorporates many of the features of the traditional Multi-Edit program (current version 9.10), that has been used by programmers, world-wide for over fifteen years.

In more news, Mr. Williams announced the imminent release of a new and related software program - "MeLite for SAS® users." This will provide SAS® language users the best editing option ever," said Mr. Williams, and fits with our goal to make editing tools more accessible and easier for the lay user, while continuing to develop greater and more expansive features for the sophisticated programmer. This foray into the simpler market is what Mr. Williams calls "MeL (MeLite) for the Masses!"

Over the years, Multi Edit Software has built its reputation on the fact that it is the one editor developed by and for its users. Most of the features built into each subsequent release of ME, have been suggested by and contributed to, by existing Multi-Edit users. Multi Edit Software, Inc has sustained user forums and contests to encourage greater involvement with its users in order to garner their suggestions, needs and ideas for direction. So, while maintaining a world-wide market, MESI endeavors to stay very connected in almost a family-like way with its user base.

For additional information and a product feature list on the new MeLite, visit the MESI website, at Multiedit.com.

Customer comments...

We develop Hotel Software which is being sold in 9 Countries. We have an existing Dos Application, which is still being supported, and developing a new Windows Product. The Dos package consists of more than 300 Source Files and the Windows package 600+. All these are used between Clipper and Xbase++. We also use some Delphi and other smaller compilers .. All used from Multi-Edit.

Finding any function, and PRG by simply giving the function name .. Absolutely superb!

Many ... Many Thanx for a Great Product !!!

Some Handy Mouse Operation Tips

- Carl Hall

For this month's newsletter I'm going to delve into some of Multi-Edit's Mouse operations that you may not be aware of and which could prove useful to both the rookie and even the seasoned veteran Multi-Edit user.

One of the most recurring questions we receive in the Support department is:
Upon clicking and dragging over text to highlight a section of code, the highlighting is stuck in a linear/columnar/stream mode. How do I switch between these abilities?

The answer is actually threefold: First, via the main menu you can set your highlighting type by going to the Edit menu and selecting Mark Line, Mark Column or Mark Stream (or use the corresponding Hotkey assignments). However, this article is about the Mouse and one of the neatest things about the program for me is the ability to click and drag on a section to highlight it and while still holding down the left button, cycle through the three different highlighting block types by clicking on the right mouse button. Remember, you must not let go of the left mouse button before clicking the right mouse button, or all you will get is the Context Menu.

Speaking of the Context Menu, in using your mouse in any file type, you have a number of options available by clicking the right mouse button in your editing window. This allows you to change the way in which you work with that particular file type, on-the-fly, without having to trudge through the whole main menu of Tools | Customize | Filename Extensions, etc. Remember, just right click and go to Customize this files settings and choose from Extension Setup, Edit Templates or Language setup and immediately access and change the settings related to the current file. Next, click on OK, until you are out of the dialogs and your changes take effect instantaneously!

Also provided in the Context Menu as the last option, is the ability to edit that very menu. Enjoy inserting or deleting commands as you see fit. All in all, these are some very handy techniques.

So, there are some quick and helpful mouse options that should provide some stimulating services for your programming prowess. Keep up the coding!

On a side note, I'd be remiss if I didn't provide a few handy links as well:
