Welcome to the Multi Edit Software Newsletter... Departures, ASCII, Product Updates and Coding...
- Chad W. Williams We're both excited and saddened with the August edition of the Developer News. Sadly, Ken Walker our Support/Tech Writer/Developer has received an offer elsewhere which he simply wasn't able to walk away from. Ken will be heavily missed, but has promised to stay involved with Multi-Edit via our forums as time allows. We wish Ken all the best luck in his new venture, and look forward to this months Developer News Contribution! Carl Hall has provided us with a wonderful in-depth look at Multi-Edit's ASCII Chart, it's usage and power. As some of you may or may not have noticed, topSTYLE is no longer a featured product on our web site. Bradbury Software, Inc., the creators of topSTYLE has been sold to NewsGator and although development of topSTYLE is still planned, our distribution contract with them has ended. For those of you who have purchased and enjoy using your copy of topSTYLE, NewsGator will continue to support the product and provide updates and upgrades as usual. I'd like to take a quick moment and wish the best of luck to Nick Bradbury and his wonderful software titles and look forward to their new releases! As always, we saved the best for last! Once again, we're providing you with a teaser of information relating to the "Submit Your Code" CMac Macro Contest. If you plan to enter, be sure to purchase your copy of the CMac Macro Guide available online for only $20.00. This book is informative and thoroughly covers CMac macros, definitions and even real world examples of usage. Get an edge on your competition and purchase your copy today! This contest will officially begin next month as noted in the contest details, so take a moment to read all about it, plan your project and prepare your entry to win!

Well friends, this month’s article will be my last submission to the newsletter. A proposal was offered to me that I simply could not refuse, which left me facing a difficult decision. You see, in addition to my work at Multi-Edit, I am also involved in training and consulting. Well, a company I do training for was very interested in my services full-time and I just couldn’t say ‘No’. I would like to say however, that Multi-Edit has been an excellent company to work for these past 2 years. And I still love MEW, and will remain a member of the Multi-Edit community within the online forums. I hope to continue contributing in other areas as well (for I love CMac!). In closing, my last project for MESI was to evaluate several editors and compare their features with MEW. What did I find?? Don’t get me wrong, we’ve got some things to work on, but all in all... Multi-Edit RULES THE EDITING WORLD!Don't forget to check out the thoroughly
thorough ME comparison chart here.: http://www.multieditsoftware.com/MEvsMISC.php This is KC9DTP, over and out. As always, any suggestions/comments can be sent to my email address: kenw@multieditsoftware.com

An excellent question and one I will answer for you today. I'm sure many of you are quite familiar with the ASCII table already, or at least have a passing familiarity with it, but do you know all the aspects of it that make it easier to use than any other editor's ASCII table, even the one provided in your OS? Why would you ever need to use the ASCII Table? Well, that certainly depends on what you do with ME on a regular basis. But, as an example, living and working in the Southwest United States I often find myself looking for the appropriate ASCII information for such characters as "ñ," "¿," and "¡" to name a few. To get to these in my Windows© interface I must go to Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Character Map. Then, find and select and copy the character you want, go back to the application you are working in and paste the character, repeat as necessary. Not very convenient, right? In Multi-Edit, all you have to do is go to the main menu and select Tools>Ascii Table. Find the character you want and hit the Paste button. Bang! It's right there at the cursor location you were just at. Also, since the ASCII table is non-modal that means you can have it up and hanging out off to the side of the editing window while you work and if you need something from it, just move over to it and grab what you need without having to re-invoke it over and over again from the menu. For some extra information on this, let me quote the Help file concerning the ASCII table. Multi-Edit does not insert the character shown in either the OEM or ANSI columns when the paste command is selected. It simply inserts the ASCII code into the file. What actually appears on your screen will depend on which font you have selected in Multi-Edit. If you have an ANSI font selected and wish to insert a special OEM font character, you will most likely need to switch to that OEM font for that character to display properly. For more information on OEM/ANSI fonts and using them in Multi-Edit, see OEM Translation or Fonts. OEM / ANSI: In Windows there are generally two different types of fonts, commonly referred to as OEM and ANSI. Both have the same ASCII codes representing the most common characters (decimal numbers, capital and lowercase letters, etc), but often have differing "non-typeable" characters (characters above ASCII 122). To accommodate this we have given the ASCII table the ability to display two different fonts. By clicking on the OEM or ANSI button, you can select a different OEM or ANSI font to display in the ASCII table. This is extremely useful for comparing two fonts. So, there is a little info on the ASCII and the utilization thereof. Not everyone has a use for it, but you may have and just didn't realize it was available and so easy to use. Until next time,
