The Issue 7 Support Article
- Carl Hall
What's a Command Map and what can I do with it? Simple enough questions, but important to those who want to utilize their hotkeys in a more efficient manner. Quite plainly, Command maps are the keystroke combinations that correspond to various commands within a program. Unfortunately, all command maps are not created equal. To begin with, your OS has a specific command map. Your email program, your browser, other editors, compilers and so on. Each having its own command map. Now, if you are a mouse guy/gal and ONLY utilize the mouse to drop down & click on Menu items, Command maps might not seem very important. But, even the most fervent mouse user will use a couple of hotkeys, maybe a quick Save, Cut & Paste, or launch the Search Dialog. At that point it's guaranteed to happen, you'll wish you could stay on that keyboard for the next set of tools you need. Let's face it most of us live and die by hotkeys. Speed and comfort is what it's all about and with Multi-Edit you have a vast array of options to choose from. Even more important, you can customize it to your heart's content if there isn't a choice that suits you perfectly. Which nicely segues into our first challenge, how do you choose a Command Map? For those who are about to install or re-install, Multi-Edit gives you an option near the end of the installation to pick your Command Map. Used to programming in Code Wright? Still hooked on the Brief commands? You can choose these or others. If Multi-Edit is already installed, head over to Tools | Customize off Multi-Edit's main menu and under 'General' at the top of the hierarchy you'll see a group of options in the main window that should garner some interest.
![]() The first is the 'Command set' itself. Clicking on the "…" button to the right of whatever Command Map you have currently selected will allow you to change to a whole different Command Map. That was easy! But what if none of the options listed are what you are looking for? Follow me as we segue into our next challenge. Let's customize/create our own Command Map. First choice: Is there a map already installed that is close or similar to what you are looking for? If so, load that map by clicking 'Command set' double click the map to set it in place. Next click on the button entitled "Keys/Commands.." The main window will list by sections the various hotkey items you might wish to assign.
![]() This has sections defined by operations. This is a lengthy list so the search button on the right of the main window comes in very handy. Allowing you to search by not only Name, but by keystrokes and even the WCMD!
![]() Once you find the Key/Command you want to modify, choose to Edit and change things as you see fit. You can even change the button that's used.
![]() Nice thing is you can do this until you've made each hotkey exactly as you like it. And, getting back to our mouse users, one more step down in the General customization area is the "Menus…" button. And, you guessed it; you can switch your Menus around to however you like them too. As always, Multi-Edit is the editor built for and by its users. Don't find a Command Map that you want, and aren't happy about having to build it yourself? Send in your requests and we'll see what we can do to assist in creating it or adding it in a future release! Or, if you've already created a custom Command Map to emulate another program, please send it in to us and we'll make it available to all Multi-Edit users. We're always looking to expand and enhance our editor to make YOUR job easier. For more information on how to create your own keymap for distribution to other users, take a look on our Support forum here: http://www.multieditsoftware.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=157 Until next time,
As always, any suggestions for a future tech article are always welcome at my email address: Carl Hall: carlh@multieditsoftware.com ... |
