Introducing our newest Programmer: Stephen Wiebelhaus

I'm Stephen Wiebelhaus and I'm a new developer here at MESI. I'd like to take a moment to introduce myself to everyone and tell you a little bit about myself, what I do here and what I can offer you as a Multi-Edit user.

In 2005 I met a wonderful, beautiful young woman Sharon. We spent hours talking to each other every night and developed a very strong connection. We got married in 2006, and have a 3-year-old daughter who spends most of the day being cute as can be.

I've been into computers for a long time. My first was a Commodore 64, back when I was six or seven. I began learning Commodore BASIC 2.0 by typing in example programs and soon found myself able to write my own. Once I was in college I got to learn real programming. In my first semester at ASU, I learned Java. During my second semester at Arizona State University (ASU), I helped a couple students transition from C++ to Java. I tutored them, helping explain some of the concepts of Java (objects, encapsulation, variable access) that were different from C++. They nicknamed me "javaman". I liked the name, and it has stuck with me as a part of my screenname and email address every since. I've made several pet programs in Java and Visual Basic. Some are games and others are utilities. Once I'm happy with the results of my concentration program, I intend to release it as shareware for educational use.

The first time I used Multi-Edit was when I was applying for the job here. ME2006 is rather simple for the beginner to use, but there are many features and options available for the hardcore programmer. After weeks of using it, I'm still finding new capabilities. The designers did a great job creating the interface and now ME is my favorite editor. I have a few features that I'm used to, that I'd like to build into it and promise to keep you informed as I do. I must also note that I was pleasantly surprised at the CMac language. It is used to define much of the Multi-Edit program and it's quite versatile and powerful.

MESI is a great company for me, I enjoy working with the people here and I am looking forward to many years of service to Multi-Edit and it's users. Aside from working to assist with normal development duties, I'm also here to assist with bugs, feature requests and of course day to day Multi-Edit questions. Please take a moment to visit our online support forums which I closely monitor daily and post your thoughts or questions. I look forward to working with all our users to help make Multi-Edit your ONLY IDE!

See you in the Forums!
Stephen Wiebelhaus

Using a Version Control System with Multi-Edit

ME and VCS

- Written by Sean Hughes

What is VCS? The management of source code, documents, graphics and related files in a large software project. Version-control software provides a database that is used to keep track of the revisions made to a program by all the programmers and developers involved in it.

Why would you want to use a VCS? One of the major reasons you would want to is the purpose of helping you maintain and track versions or revisions of a set of files.

To setup up a VCS package within Multi-Edit you'll need to follow the steps noted below.

1. Open Multi-Edit

2. Go to the Vcs | Configue... menu.

3. Check the Enabled checkbox.

4. Click the Vcs Package button which by default is set to None.

5. Within this dialog select which Version Control System you plan to use.

Example: SVN

6. Once the Package is selected, click the Edit button.

7. You'll only need to add or change the Base Dir to reflect the Bin Directory of the Version Control System you've selected. as shown in the example below.

Example: Change Base Dir to reflect the Bin Directory

You are now complete with setting up your Multi-Edit installation to use your preferred Vcs package and can begin with checking a file out of the repository. To do this, open up one of these files within Multi-Edit and begin editing. When editing of the file or files is complete, select any one or more of the commands below to Update, Checkout, Compare, Commit or pull a History on the file being edited.

  • The Vcs | Put (Update) current file command is used to put your changes you made to the file into your repository. When you click the Vcs | Put (Update) current file command it will present a pop-up dialog where you can note any revisions made to the file for others to view what changes were made to the file.

  • The Vcs | Extract (Checkout) current file command is used to get the latest changes made to the currently opened file from the repository.

  • The Vcs | Visual Compare current file command brings up the compare utility to compare the current file to the file in the repository.

  • The Vcs | History (List) current file command will provide you with the history of the currently opened file.
