News from Dan Hughes

file documents image mobileME2008 NEW Release, ME2008 update

- Dan Hughes

There has been quite a bit of development work done since the last newsletter and we have brought all of our Multi-Edit products up to the 2008 release. In the future look for us to update all products about the same time as the core code is now being shared by all Multi-Edit based products.

The first release of the mobileME product has been labeled "mobileME (v11.01.00)" which corresponds with the released version for the other products. There has been some work done on the mobileME program other than just updating the Multi-Edit core. The directory layout has been restructured to adhere to the directory layout used by the PortableApps programs. This permits mobileME to work alongside any of their programs and also be able to use their PortableAppsMenu program or any of the customized menu programs that work with them. Also the main mobileME program was rewritten to help reduce the number of writes to the USB stick when starting up so that the life of the portable device might be extended some.

Another major change with the v11.01.00 release is our programs are no longer dependent upon the runtime libraries we had distributed in past releases. Thus the executable files will be a bit larger but the elimination of using the runtime libraries has greatly improved the stability of Multi-Edit. Most of the shutdown issues we have seen in the past versions appear to have been resolved by this change.

For more information on the release notes for the Multi-Edit 2008 11.01.00 builds please refer to the Readme.txt files noted below.

Please review the Multi-Edit 2008 README file

Please review the mobileME 2008 README file

Until the next Newsletter...
Happy Coding!

Server Migration, Email Issues

file documents image Collateral Damage in the War On Spam

- Geoff Fritz

To keep this introduction short and sweet, I am the system administrator responsible for the care and feeding of Multi-Edit's servers. Hired as a contractor, I have been working with Multi-Edit since early 2004, sometimes as-needed, sometimes for on-going projects and maintenance.

Of the machines I maintain, the most visible are the web and mail servers. I don't often correspond with customers or manage content on the web site itself, opting to remain under the radar by keeping these services running smoothly and reliably. The less noticed I am, the better I'm doing my job (or so I hope).

In the first week of July, I migrated the servers to new hardware within Multi-Edit's hosting provider. It was an all-around good deal (more bang for less buck), and the migration went smoothly. In theory, nobody should have noticed. The new servers went online alongside the old, and with a change at the domain registrar, traffic transparently began to find its way to the new machines. After a day or two, the old servers were retired.

It wasn't until a week later, after the July 2008 Developer News was sent, that I learned of a very serious problem. The new address space acquired through the server migration had been blacklisted due to the misbehavior of a previous owner. This resulted in the newsletter being undeliverable to many subscribers (bad) and several support and sales emails appearing to go unanswered (really bad).

Being on public blacklists (often used by email software) wasn't the problem; Multi-Edit's addresses and domains were not even listed on these services. The problem was that many sites have internal lists of their own. So instead of having to contact a single organization that would clear access to multiple sites, I had to contact each individual site.

Some mail servers provided error codes that allowed me to locate the online form to request removal. Some sites were quick to remove the listing, while others took several days or rejected requests altogether. Some sites would remove the listing, then immediately list the server again when it tried to send something, regardless of how many times I submitted a removal request. A few sites simply rejected or stalled mail without explanation, forcing me to contact the end users themselves via a personal account.

After a week of this, I opened up a support ticket with the hosting provider, under the theory that they sold us "damaged goods" to begin with, in the form of tainted IP space. In addition, I had hoped that they would be seen as more authoritative than myself in the eyes of the larger companies, and could get faster, more permanent results.

I was wrong.

After a week of unsuccessfully trying to clear us from various lists themselves, the provider offered a new netblock, which was pre-screened beforehand. Late at night on August 20th, I reconfigured the servers, changed the DNS records, and rebooted. Multi-Edit's mail server came back up with its third IP address in as many weeks.

Since then, I've only been alerted to one rejection, which I submitted a removal to and haven't seen duplicated since. As far as I can tell, the new address space is "clean" in the eyes of domains that had previously rejected it.

For those of you who didn't receive a newsletter or a response to an email query earlier this month, you now have an explanation as to why. It wasn't neglect on the part of Multi-Edit's staff or a failing of their servers. It was someone on the receiving end mistaking Multi-Edit for a spammer and not listening to advice to the contrary. On behalf of Multi-Edit, I wish to thank you for your patience and continued patronage. With any luck, this should not happen again.

Customer Service

file documents image Upgrades: Who, When, Where and Why?

- Michele Hegwood

website placement image

With the announcement of the new upgrade now available for mobileME & the introduction of our bundled packages, there are sure to be inquiries as to Who, When, Where, & How one can upgrade their version of Multi-Edit, so please be sure to read the following intently because the answers to your questions should be more than evident (& if not, email me directly @ sales@multieditsoftware.com.

Who is eligible to upgrade their mobileME?

Firstly, let me start by indicating to those who have purchased the mobileME 2006 in the past 45-days will automatically receive a Free Upgrade to the mobileME 2008, which will ship immediately after the release of the mobileME 2008. Announcements will be sent to those purchasers automatically, & if you do not receive one or feel you are entitled to receive this upgrade, email me directly @ sales@multieditsoftware.com.

The earliest (oldest) version of the mobileME is mobileME 2006, therefore only current users of the mobileME 2006 & current users of the full-version of Multi-Edit 2008 (ME2k8) are entitled to purchase the mobileME 2008 @ the upgrade price. Please note that you will need your mobileME 2006 serial number or ME2k8, ME2k6 or ME 9.10 serial number on hand when ordering the upgrade. The upgrade is the exact same product as the new-user, same install as well, the only difference is in the price (new vs. upgrade).

?! Important?! The mobileME 2008 will only sale as a shipped product; however, customers will continue to receive a complimentary download link for immediate use of the program.

Who is eligible to upgrade to one of the Bundled Packages?

Upgrading to one of the bundles, moME+ME+BC or moME+ME+EZRTools, will be allowed for those who are currently using Multi-Edit versions 9.10 through ME2k8 only. To easily check the version you are currently running please go to the programs Help | About menu, if your serial number begins w/ ME91, ME2K6, or ME2k8, you are eligible to purchase the Upgrade. Please note that you will need your current version serial number (v.9.10 to current ME2k8) on hand when ordering the upgrade.

Need a little more clarity? Send along an email to sales@multieditsoftware.com and I'll handle your questions personally.

When are these products available for purchase?

Purchase of these New Products is now available as of August 26, 2008.

Where/How can I purchase the new mobileME 2008 &/or one of the new Bundled-Packages?

The easiest & quickest way to purchase is through our secure online purchase webpage @ https://www.multieditsoftware.com/meorder/ . If you encounter problems ordering or have additional questions regarding purchasing, please email me directly @ sales@multieditsoftware.com. & yes I will accept a company purchase order (I understand many organizations require them) however the payment terms will remain pre-paid. In this case, if I am given a check number & date the check was issued, I will release the software to you prior to receiving the check - assuming of course that you have a good purchase history withME.
