Development News from Dan Hughes

file documents image Questions and Input

- Dan Hughes

Development News
================

We in the MESi development labs have been busy researching and experimenting with ideas and code for the next major release of Multi-Edit and thus haven't had much to discuss outside the lab. We recently received an e-mail from a user that stated that he knew we were busy but to users it appeared that we were doing nothing. That got me to thinking... Here we are working on the next version of "The Programmer's Editor designed by its users" and we haven't actually been asking our users their opinion on anything. Not good!

So with this article we hope to generate a new wave of more input from you.

History
================

The original version of Multi-Edit was written in Pascal to run under DOS. Custom code was written so that lines longer than 256 characters could be used. Quite a bit of assembler was used to make the editor operate as fast as it could and a macro language was built in so that the editor core could be easily manipulated.

Later this base code was modified to first allow it to run under 16-bit Windows and later updated again to work under 32-bit Windows. The current version of Multi-Edit is the result of many years of making changes to that original code base.

Over time user requirements have changed and we have implemented features that users want to the best of our abilities, using the current code. We have now found ourselves unable to add some capability on top of the current code base.

For instance, Unicode is required to edit XML files and seems to be the standard for the future. Multi-Edit has had limited support added to allow some Unicode files to be viewed but editing and saving these files without data loss isn't possible without major changes to the base code.

We have been reviewing and modifying the current code to try to rewrite it to allow editing Unicode files. The changes needed will affect the editor in many ways and we are at the point that we are needing to know from you our users how we should continue. There are a number of ways to proceed and we are creating some polls on our forum, where your input will help us determine the necessary changes needed to best serve you.

Questions
================

1. How should the next version of Multi-Edit be implemented?
http://www.multiedit.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2285

2. How should we implement the Unicode editing core?
http://www.multiedit.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2286

3. How should the editing core support external extensions?
http://www.multiedit.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2287

4. What extension languages should be available?
http://www.multiedit.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2288

5. What GUI libraries should be used?
http://www.multiedit.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2289

There are many more questions we would like answers to but they kind of depend upon the results of the above questions so they can wait unti a future time.

Until the next Newsletter...
Happy Coding!

Support Notes

file documents image What's New with the Multi-Edit Wiki

When a web site has been around as long as Multi-Edit's, sometimes content gets lost. Useful tidbits of information, such as a once-prominent leading thread in the forum or a how-to article from the newsletter, get swept aside for the latest question or most recent product announcement. While still available, sometimes this information is tough to find. Sure, search engines help in this regard, but sometimes it's nice to have related documentation all organized and tidied up, ready for easy perusal.

That's where the Multi-Edit wiki comes into play. Announced with the release of Multi-Edit 2008 (as the primary source of the Multi-Edit 2008 Manual), the wiki is currently a little-used resource. Hopefully this will soon change.

In recent weeks, content from various sources has been migrated over to the new wiki. For example, the Tutorial page has been filled with a collection of useful CMac articles, as well as a few other useful topics.

As with all housecleaning, however, sometimes things get broken in the move. Code examples, for instance, are easily munged up from translation of one markup scheme to another. Sometimes older articles are incorrect for recent versions of the product. If you come across any obviously broken pieces of documentation, please send your observations to support@multiedit.com so we can get things fixed. Of course we will continue to vet the existing pages, in addition to adding more content as we find stuff suitable for relocation.

scroll down to "EOL Comment 1", then on the far right, under "Font style", uncheck the box for "Italics".

Repeat for EOL Comment 2,3,4, and Open/Close Comment 1 & 2. Click 'Save' (upper left) before clicking 'OK' or the change will just be temporary.

Beyond Compare allows you to quickly and easily compare your files and folders.  By using simple, powerful commands you can focus on the differences you're interested in and ignore those you're not.  You can then merge the changes, synchronize your files, and generate reports for your records.

You can compare entire drives and folders at high speed, checking just sizes and modified times.  Or, thoroughly verify every file with byte-by-byte comparisons.  FTP sites and zip files are integrated seamlessly, so you can update your website with the touch of a button.

Once you've found specific files you're interested in, Beyond Compare can intelligently pick the best way to compare and display them.  Text files can be viewed and edited with syntax highlighting and comparison rules tweaked specifically for documents, source code, and HTML.  Data files, executables, binary data, and images all have dedicated viewers as well, so you always have a clear view of the changes.
