4/11/95 1:58PM INTEGRATING MULTI-EDIT INTO THE BORLAND C++ WINDOWS IDE In order for you to use Multi-Edit as your default editor under Borland C++ (Windows), you must configure the IDE so that the it is capable of using .PDL files. These files are text versions of the .IDE files which correspond to your projects and can be easily edited. It will be necessary for you to convert the .IDE files of any projects that you may have already created into .PDL files. To configure BC++ to use .PDL files, do the following: 1. Use Multi-Edit to edit the file \BC45\BIN\BCW.INI 2. Locate the [Project] section of this file and add the following: SaveAsText=1 ReadAsText=1 Note: A .PDL file will now be created for all projects. Currently existing projects will have a .PDL file created by simply opening then closing the project. To integrate Multi-Edit into the IDE, do the following: 1. In order for all new projects to contain the correct information, you must make some changes to the available Tools. To do so, access the 'Options -> Tools' menu item. 2. A dialog will appear containing many tools. Locate and highlight the BriefCurrNodes item. 3. Press the Copy button and fill in the fields as follows. Name: Multi-Edit Path: C:\MEW\MEW.EXE Command Line: $EDNAME /L$LINE Menu Text: &Multi-Edit Help Hint: Multi-Edit on current nodes Note: This information assumes that Multi-Edit is installed in C:\MEW. If this is not the case, change the path accordingly. 4. Access the Advanced options from this dialog. 5. Setup the Advanced dialog options as follows. Tool Type: Viewer Tool Usage: Enable all checkboxes. The "Applies To" and "Default For" fields can be set to your preference. If you are not sure what these fields are for, access the help button from this dialog for more information on these fields. 6. Select "OK" for each dialog box until no more dialog boxes appear on the screen. Now, access the Options menu and select 'Save'. Now Multi-Edit will appear on the View and Speed menus and it will be launched from new projects when you double click on the source code modules. 7. If you already have projects created, you can modify the .PDL files so that Multi-Edit replaces the default editor. To do so, you must have already completed steps 1 through 8. 8. Use Multi-Edit to edit the \BC4\BIN\BCWDEF.PDL file. 9. In this file, locate the line which reads { SubSystem = Tool 10. Copy this entire section into the other the .PDL files that correspond to all existing projects, replacing the old information. Be sure to save the files afterwards. Note: If the .PDL file does not exist, simply open the project then close it and one will be created. 11. While still in Multi-Edit, access the 'Tools -> Customize -> Backups, Tempfiles, Autosave' menu selection. In the dialog box that appears, turn on the following options... Save files when switching tasks Reload changed files when switching back Also, set the "Determine changed file by" option to "Date/Time". 12. Select 'OK' to exit the dialog then 'Close' from the Customize dialog so your settings will be saved. Your Borland C++ environment should now be setup to use Multi-Edit for Windows.
